The start of Schuco
Felix Huttrer, the founder of Schuco in all of its guises, set the business up on 18th October, 1957.
Felix was an electronics engineer by training and had a background of solving problems with radios and televisions working with Radio Rentals. This technical expertise and interfacing directly with customers to solve the in-house problems set the scene for how Schuco operate as a business and reflect the importance of satisfying the end user, a guiding principle of the business for over 50 years and still of paramount importance to this day.
A family connection lead to the link with Schueler & Company, an American business that was innovative in its way of working and operated as an American Export house, finding technologies that were world leaders and exporting them into Europe. They solved the problems with the difficulties to export things from America and started to export medical equipment. These leading technologies were exported to London, Hamburg, Tokyo and Vienna.
In these early days, the business operated as the UK office of Schueler & Company and essentially sold what it was given and in 1966 the business moved to Challenge House.
In further developing this partnership and recognising the business growth, Felix set up the independent Schuco International (London) Ltd in 1970. This significant change was led by customers asking for products that were not in the portfolio and Felix’s desire to fully service his customers. Thus, Schueler became a supplier and different market opportunities were developed by responding to this customer demand. This, in essence, was the launch of ‘Challenge Schuco’ and also led to numerous laboratory specialities being sourced by Schuco.
